Individual Artist Grants for Advancing Artists in Minnesota (USA)
GrantID: 9573
Grant Funding Amount Low: $5,000
Deadline: Ongoing
Grant Amount High: $5,000
Summary
This grant program serves a region of southeastern Minnesota covering 11 counties. It provides funding for individual artists, arts‑organizations, non‑arts nonprofits, local governments, schools, and other community institutions — not for for‑profit businesses. The support aims to help create and present arts and cultural work, support arts education, and increase access to creative opportunities across the region.
One major grant type supports individual artists and culture bearers who live in the region. These grants help individuals in many artistic disciplines — visual arts, music, dance, theatre, literary and interdisciplinary arts — to create new work, stage performances or exhibitions, or otherwise engage the public with their art. Emerging artists can receive grants in the range of about $2,000 to $4,000, while more established (“advancing”) artists may get about $3,000 to $6,000.
Other grants support nonprofit arts organizations or non‑arts organizations that want to mount arts projects — performances, exhibitions, publications, or other public events — and may fund community‑wide arts access, education, or cultural heritage programming. Grants for organizations tend to be larger, often between $3,000 and $11,000 depending on the scope. There are also provisions for funding arts residencies or arts‑in‑schools efforts, including bringing artists into K–12 schools for residencies or arts‑education activities (with grants around $2,000 to $4,000 for those projects).
Eligible applicants vary by grant type: individual artists/culture bearers must live full‑time in the SEMAC region for a specified period; arts organizations must have nonprofit status (or fiscal sponsorship) and be based in the region; schools must be non‑religious K–12 schools in the region; non‑arts community organizations may also apply if collaborating on arts engagement in their communities.
The application deadlines depend on the specific grant program. For individual artist grants, submission windows include late July and mid‑January. Organization and project grants typically have two rounds per year. Grant cycles are recurring; artists and organizations may apply during each cycle, though individuals who receive certain grants may need to wait a year before reapplying.
The benefits of these grants include financial support for creative production, public engagement, community arts access, arts education, and strengthening regional arts infrastructure — helping artists, schools, and community groups bring arts to life in southeastern Minnesota.
