Grant Overview
Minnesota is home to a diverse population of Indigenous communities, with over 80,000 American Indians residing in the state. However, Indigenous language loss is a significant concern, with many languages considered endangered. Capacity Building for Indigenous Language Revitalization is critical to preserving cultural heritage and identity. Who Should Apply in Minnesota? Eligible applicants include Indigenous organizations, tribal governments, and educational institutions with experience in language revitalization. Minnesota's Indigenous Language Landscape is characterized by a rich cultural diversity, with over 10 distinct Indigenous languages spoken in the state. Applicants must demonstrate capacity to develop and implement immersive language programs, as well as engage with community members. Unlike neighboring states, Minnesota requires applicants to demonstrate understanding of tribal sovereignty and commitment to community-led initiatives. Capacity Requirements in Minnesota include existing language expertise, community partnerships, and infrastructure for program delivery. Funding will be used to support development of language curricula, hiring of language instructors, and community-based language programs. Minnesota's Indigenous language revitalization initiatives aim to increase fluency levels among participants by 25% and promote greater community engagement in cultural events.
