Minnesota's diverse cultural backgrounds are not always reflected in the state's reading materials, with many community members reporting a lack of representation in literature. To address this barrier, funding will support a series of community readings and discussions focusing on literature that reflects the state's cultural diversity. Graduate students in literature will facilitate these gatherings in public libraries and community centers, fostering dialogue and understanding among participants. Minnesota's Cultural Literacy Through Community Readings initiative aims to increase cultural literacy across the community, measuring engagement through attendance and participant feedback. Who Faces this Barrier in Minnesota? The state's Somali and Hmong populations, among others, have reported feeling underrepresented in literature, highlighting the need for more inclusive reading materials. Unlike Iowa applications, Minnesota requires applicants to demonstrate a clear understanding of the state's cultural diversity and a plan for addressing the needs of multiple cultural groups. The funding will prioritize projects that utilize public libraries and community centers in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, as well as rural communities in southern Minnesota. By supporting graduate students in literature, Minnesota aims to create a more culturally responsive literary landscape that reflects the state's diverse communities. The project's success will be measured through attendance figures and participant feedback, with a target of reaching 2,000 community members in the first year. Minnesota's rich literary heritage, including the works of authors such as Sinclair Lewis and Meridel Le Sueur, will be celebrated through the community readings and discussions.
