Grant Overview

Preserving Dakota Language Through Community Libraries in Minnesota

Minnesota hosts one of the largest populations of Dakota speakers in the United States. However, the Dakota language has experienced a rapid decline in fluency, highlighting a significant cultural and linguistic preservation gap that the state must address. The Minnesota Department of Administration reports that, while the state values its Native heritage, educational resources for Dakota language learning remain minimal and scattered, making it difficult for community members to access necessary materials.

Community libraries in Minnesota stand at the forefront of this challenge. They serve as crucial access points for educational resources but are often under-resourced in terms of language-specific materials. Dakota community members, educators, and librarians face the challenge of ensuring that the language both survives and thrives in everyday usage. Without dedicated initiatives, this critical cultural resource risks becoming increasingly inaccessible to future generations.

The DLI-DEL Fellowships provide an opportunity to bridge this gap by facilitating partnerships between libraries and Dakota language experts. The funding will support the expansion of Dakota language resources in community libraries across Minnesota, empowering them to serve as hubs of learning for Dakota speakers and learners. This initiative targets the unique needs of Minnesota, focusing on areas where library access can make a tangible difference in language revitalization efforts.

The implementation of this initiative will involve collaboration with Dakota community leaders and linguists to curate and develop essential learning materials. Workshops and training sessions at local libraries will be organized to educate community members about available resources. By ensuring that libraries are equipped with the necessary tools to foster Dakota language learning, Minnesota takes a vital step toward preserving its unique cultural heritage. Unlike North Dakota, where the concentration of resources is often centralized, Minnesota's approach emphasizes decentralized, community-driven access to language education.

In summary, the initiative aims to not only increase resource availability but also to foster an environment where Dakota learners of all ages can connect with their cultural heritage.
